New dates just announced for Summer 2023!
The Leading Ladies are proud to present their community outreach program, the "LADIES NIGHT" Jazz Jam series. These jams were created to build a safe and comfortable environment for women and non-binary folks to play music, make mistakes, and grow their jazz ability.
Each evening will provide an opportunity for folks to sit in with the band as they rehearse, allowing them to practice their sight reading and learn how to play in a strong ensemble. Then the evening will switch over to the traditional jam format where folks will be welcome to come up and play a tune, alongside members of the band, who will act as mentors and supporters.
Jam books will be provided for each instrument. If you're new to jazz or aren't comfortable playing a tune from memory, feel free to have a look through the books and pick a tune you like.
Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell.
Intended audience: This is an event for cis and trans women, as well as non-binary people who are comfortable in a space that centers on the experiences of women.
This project is made possible with the support of Rising Youth, Taking IT Global and the Canada Service Corps.
"I love coming here because it's a great safe space to try and polish your jazz skills!"
- Saige, atendee, guitar
"Attending the Ladies Night Jam was a unique experience of music making that included reading
big band charts and playing an informal jam session with musicians of varying skill levels.
I felt comfortable to play and be myself in this setting without the
usual pressure that accompanies playing in a male-dominated jam space.
- Anna, attendee, saxophone
It's so much fun to be able to play with other female and non-binary folks.
It's really such as safe space and we always have such a great time!"
-Emma, attendee, bassist
